At the moment I am busy creating work for the upcoming Golden Plains Arts Trail. This is a section of a WIP for my open studio on the weekend of 12th and 13th April. I am calling this artwork ‘Gold and Greenhoods’. This time, I am taking a comparatively figurative approach to the painting. One of the local native orchids, the Nodding Greenhood (Pterostylis nutans)is the hero of the work. Nodding Greenhood orchids flower at the end of winter, emerging into spring.

Figurative Paintings
I’m finding that working on a more figurative painting is slower. I need to keep stopping and thinking. With abstract work, I go with my emotions in a flow. Decisions are intuitive.
One of our locally wild terrestrial orchids is the ‘Nodding Greenhood’ so I want to paint it accurately. I think my loose, partially abstract style is still there. However, to paint the orchid accurately does need more attention. The canvas I’m using is 1 meter square, so this Nodding Greenhood flower is huge. I can’t wait for it to be completed and hanging on my gallery wall.
