It’s interesting to me that I love painting abstract works. When I look back on photographs I have taken, I see abstraction in these as well. When I post them, I use the term abstract nature.
The photograph below is a section of an elongated palm tree seed pod. The actual seed pod is at least 1.5 meters long. The seeds themselves are round and many have fallen out of the seed pod when it hit the ground. Or they were eaten by Sulphur Crested Cockatoos before the seed pod fell. The end result is the linear texture of the outer casing of the seed pod, contrasted with the wavy lines of the inner seed pod.
The light colours in the outer casing also contrast with the darker colours of the interior. For me, this is a painting waiting to be created.

Abstract Nature
Some people are drawn to beauty. For me, it’s abstraction. Abstract nature is a term I have seen online. It describes perfectly what I capture in many of my photographs.
The line delineating wet sand from dry, a wiggling path eaten into a tree trunk by burrowing larvae, grass fronds lit differently by the sun. There is something about these images which draws my eye before I have time to think.
An aspect of form, contrast or composition has registered in my brain and I act on it. It’s a pure intuitive reaction to something. The shutter has been activated before I know what I’m looking at on many occasions. The images are revealed to me when I load them onto my computer.
To me, abstract nature images are enchanting and evocative. However, I think it is a pretty niche category.
My Photography Page
Over the last few years, I’ve taken down most of my online photographs. Partly this was because I was turning to painting and to fabric design. However, as I write my 100 Days of Art posts, I realise the creative thread which links my photography to my paintings and fabric designs. So, I am starting to create a page dedicated to my photography. See it here.
