‘Coastal Break’ is one of the new paintings I displayed on the Golden Plains Arts Trail weekend. I think it works as a diptych with ‘City Lights In the Rain’ – the two paintings began at the same time but took on different scenes. You can find ‘Coastal Break’ on Bluethumb, an online gallery, along with ‘City Lights In the Rain’ and a few other abstract landscapes I have for sale. Here is a general link to my Bluethumb page.
I love the flow of the shoreline across both works; and the curves of the waves and upper shoreline also play off each other. One visitor to my studio said she could see Warrnambool in ‘Coastal Break’. I’m originally from Warrnambool, so perhaps it’s in the colours. I certainly spent a lot of time on rocky shores when I was growing up.
‘City Lights in the Rain’ has some connection with Geelong for me. It’s not literally a painting of Geelong, but when visiting my parents, we drove home in the rain. I distinctly remember the lights on the windscreen at dusk, with colours and forms distorted. I remember this when I look at the painting.
