One of my favourite abstract paintings I’ve done is one I call ‘Canyon Texture’. Truth is, it is pure abstraction without intentions. I wanted to experiment with colour and texture. The title of the work comes from an impression I had when it was finished.

Interpreting the Work
I’m quite happy with ‘Canyon Texture’ as a title. Equally, I could have linked it to Central Australia or beautifully painted boxes from China or Japan. It strongly resonates with memories I have of my grandmother’s painted jewellery box, in this style.
Viewers of the painting have variously said it reminds them of looking down at an underfoot path, or looking into a landscape. This is one of the things I love about abstract paintings. The meaning is truly with the viewer. It never ceases to amaze me how creative people are in their interpretations of an assembly of marks, colours and textures.
The original painting is for sale on Bluethumb.
New Life as a Fabric Panel
Recently, I’ve printed ‘Canyon Texture’ on various sized fabric panels for textile artists. It can be cut up for elements on a completely new textile artwork, used for free motion embroidery, or quilting.
I’ll have these at my open studio on 12th and 13th April, as part of the Golden Plains Arts Trail. More information about this coming soon.
