Day 61: Spoonflower and my ‘Twilight’ Fabric Collection

About a decade ago, I opened a shop on Spoonflower. It’s an affordable way of starting up in fabric design. At the time, there were few other options when I just wanted samples and fat quarters. Quilting was uppermost in my mind back then.

The ‘Twilight’ Collection

One night I was walking back to the house from the bushland on our property. I’d been photographing plants, and it kept me out longer than I had planned. As the sun set, the sky turned an amazing shade of pink, with deeper violets and greys behind silhouetted trees. I spotted a magpie high in one tree. It seemed to be gazing at the sky too.

The photograph I took was the inspiration for the ‘Twilight’ collection of fabrics. I designed it with quilting and home sewists in mind.

Evolving Options and Decisions

When I first opened my Spoonflower shop, it was under the name Musing Meanders and I’ve kept this name. The origin of Musing Meanders is here. At that time, Spoonflower only printed fabric and wallpaper. So, the ‘Twilight’ collection was designed for people who buy fabric to make their own items.

In the last few years, Spoonflower has added home decor items to their offerings. ‘Twilight’ collection fabrics work well on some products, but not so well on others.

As a designer, I can opt in or opt out of having my designs on Spoonflower’s home decor products. I can’t pick and choose which products I want my fabric to appear on, depending on the design. I also can’t align the fabric to suit each individual product. However, I can offer the option to request a custom element repeat size to those who want something specific. Please contact me if this is something you want to explore.

Home Decor Products

While quilting is still in my mind, I think I want to delve more into home decor products. This means having more control over the way my designs are applied to specific products. I’m standing at the starting line on this venture. Ideas swirl around my brain every day. It’s a matter of research and viability.

Before I start, I need to make decisions about what types of home decor products I want to specialise in. There are so many options to explore.
