Day 52: Luna, the Studio Cat

Photograph: Siamese cat Luna laying on the studio visitor chair.

Meet Luna, my companion and studio cat. Most mornings she walks with me from the house to the studio, stretching out in the morning sunlight. As the sun moves, so does she. Perhaps on top of the storage cupboard, on my desk, on the art table or the floor. Like most cats, she always finds the warmest place. Or the place she can most get in the way of what I’m trying to do.

Double Trouble

We initially bought two kittens from Rosemarie Cattery. For 12 years Luna had a sister, Clio. They did everything together. So, when the studio was first built, there were two studio cats. Back then, they mainly liked to curl up together to sunbake.

Sadly, Clio died in 2021. Luna adapted pretty well, but she misses Clio’s constant presence. After Clio died, she nominated me as her constant companion. She is rarely in a different room than I’m in and she follows me from space to space. It’s lucky I’m home most of the time.

Luna and Clio are Old Style Siamese cats. Often, cats of this breed are referred to as ‘apple heads’ because of the rounded head shape. I believe in some circles the breed is now referred to as Thai cats. Whatever the name of the breed now, I could not have asked for more intelligent, faithful, fun-loving companions.

Luna is still well. She is losing her hearing, but still as switched on as ever. She knows what I am going to do before I do. If I vary from my routine, I certainly hear about it. I am so thankful to have her in my life, and as my studio cat. Always, but especially now when I’m recovering from treatment. She loves her cuddles and sleeps in my lap.

Here are some photographs of Luna and Clio together.
